The real problem…
Wants vs needs.
I need a vacation.
We need a new car, ours is acting up.
I need those shoes, they are so cute.
Have you ever said something like that? This is the biggest problem I see every time I go over a budget with the client.
“I need the expensive face cream, it’s the only thing that works for me.”
“We need the passes for the ski hill every winter, it is our family activity.”
“I need to eat organic.”
WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP.
If you have ever wondered how I speak with my clients…that’s it right there. I will call you on your crap and question the lies that you have been telling yourself. Let’s take the lady with the face cream for example…
Me: “Will you die if you don’t have it?”
Her: “Well no…”
Me: “Will someone get hurt because you don’t have it?”
Me: “You are overspending every month by $2000….do you still need the cream?”
Her: “Probably not…”
It is amazing the things we can talk ourselves into purchasing but the problem is it becomes an emotional want not a physical need. We need shelter, clothing, food, transportation…but we don’t need extravagant homes that are renovated on a yearly basis, we don’t need designer clothes, we don’t need a lot of things that society has told us we need. The problem is thanks to credit everyone thinks they can afford it!
I’m not saying you can never have those things but use your brain! Ask yourself before a purchase, do I really need this? Before you start that next home renovation…does it have to be done right now? Who are you trying to impress?
