FREE TV when you sign up on a two year contract! But what if I told you that TV is far from free… find out what the companies don’t want you to know!
I can’t count how many times I have had people tell me about this “great deal” with a company for my cable and internet. Firstly I don’t actually have cable, like every other normal person out there I mostly watch Netflix and movies (I mean let’s face it the news has nothing nice to say and I don’t really love commercials)
Back to my point…we recently moved and with that move we will had the option for faster internet and cable. Now we haven’t had cable since the NHL went on strike in 2005 (Can you tell I’m Canadian?) When we made the decision to move it mean changes to the budget so I started looking around at my options.
Because I am always on the hunt for the best deals and ways to save money I decided to take a bit of a further look into this “Free TV” promotion. Here is what I found out from a company’s website.
(Note: To keep it simple I picked the same packages each time.)
Option 1: Free TV, High Speed Internet, 6 Theme Cable Package (2 Year Term)
$140/month for 2 years = TOTAL COST $3360
Options 2: No TV, High Speed Internet, 6 Theme Cable Package (2 Year Term =$50 credit on first bill/$25 for the first 6 months)
$25/month for first 6 months = $150
$50 Credit on first bill = -$50
$130/month for other 18 mo =$2340
TOTAL COST = $2440
So let’s look at the last part of the math (stay with me…)
$3660 (TV Package)
-$2440 (No TV Package)
Now you might think, well hey I’m not paying for the TV, WRONG! You are in face paying $920 for a TV that has a $499 Regular price and is actually currently on sale for $450. You know what that means? It means that you just paid DOUBLE the price for a TV. To top it off they have wonderful fees if you ever decide to try and get out of that 2 year contract first they will charge you for the remaining balance of the TV plus an additional $10/month for each month you are cancelling. What a great deal hey!
