I don’t know about where you live but where I am the snow has hit the ground and that signals that Christmas is just around the corner! It never fails that Halloween isn’t even over and the stores are starting to stock the shelves with endless chocolates and Christmas decorations. This is occasionally the point where people begin to realize how close Christmas actually is. What if you didn’t budget for it yet!? Here are a few ways to help you budget for Christmas with only 6 weeks to go!
Budget for Christmas With Only 6 Weeks to Go!
- Get that list built!
First off who do you need to buy for? There is nothing worse than thinking you are done and then SURPRISE you find another 4 or 5 people you forgot. That’s a really great way to blow the budget in a hurry! Before you even start that list check out this article; You don’t have to buy for everyone at Christmas. It always stuns me when I hear someone talk about the 40 people they “NEED” to buy for.
- Ask yourself, what can you afford to budget? If you already live paycheque to paycheque you may not have a great deal to spend in the first place. Knowing what you can afford will help you stay on track and give you a guideline to stick to. Think back to your childhood, was Christmas always a huge deal? Did you get a ton of presents or maybe only one small thing? Emotions and commercialism have taken Christmas to a whole new level. I think about my own children and 9 times out of 10 they have more fun with a dishwasher box than they do with a $150 toy. Ask yourself what is really important this Christmas before you start building a ridiculous budget.
- Buy one or two things a week for the next 6 weeks. Let’s say you’ve built your list and you know you have 12 gifts you need to buy over the next 6 weeks. Don’t go break the bank but doing them all in one night. Buy 2 items a week so that you can fit it into your weekly budget and not cause yourself extra stress when one giant credit card bill comes. If it is too late and you’ve already put Christmas on credit you may want to read
- Don’t forget dinner! Are you responsible for Christmas dinner? If so don’t forget to add that into your money for the month! If you’re cooking for 10 or more people that is not something normal for day to day budgeting. Be sure to add it in!
- Shop the sales! In my article 5 Ways to Save Cash This Christmas I talk a bit about a few ways to save. One of which is shopping sales. The particular item my daughter wants so badly on Amazon is currently $80 off! I know if I “hold out” for a better deal I’ll probably end up paying more. Shopping early and shopping sales will save you money!
