Are you wealthy?
What does wealth mean to you?
I recently ran into an old acquaintance/customer and I was explaining to him what exactly I do for work now, let’s call him Mr. Business.
Now Mr. Business has various companies, investments, real estate etc. His first question after I explained to him what I do was “Well what is your financial situation? I wouldn’t take any type of advice or coaching from someone that didn’t at least have a couple million in the bank.”
I was slightly stunned for a moment and then just smiled to him and responded with, “I have a plan and a set figure in my head but interestingly enough I don’t believe you have to have billions or millions to be considered wealthy.” Side note – Now let’s get one thing straight – I do not object to becoming a millionaire or billionaire in the near future – think of how many more charities I could support or how many more people I could help!
Anyways, back to the story. I continued to give him some examples of clients I have worked with…from the single mom with huge debt to the successful business owners who struggle with their personal/home finances. Interestingly enough he was able to relate to the business owners.
Mr. Business quietly said…”Ya, I spend a lot of money…” He considers himself wealthy but still seemed miserable.
It got me to thinking what do I consider to be wealthy?
What do YOU consider to be wealthy?
The definition on Dictionary.com states…
- a great quantity or store of money, valuable possessions, property, or other riches:
- an abundance or profusion of anything; plentiful amount:
- all things that have a monetary or exchange value.
- anything that has utility and is capable of being appropriated or exchanged.
- rich or valuable contents or produce:
- the state of being rich; prosperity; affluence: persons of wealth and standing.
- Obsolete, happiness.
For me personally, wealth is not just about the bank account. It is a combination of everything in my life; friends, family, happiness and yes a little about the bank account.
Let’s look at the two finger family examples below… Who is wealthier?
Finger family #1 (Beach) – They put the entire vacation on a credit card so they could say that they went on a holiday this year. Mom and Dad constantly fight about the finances and the kids posed for this picture but secretly can’t wait to go back to their computer games in the hotel room.
Finger family #2 (Park) – They enjoyed a stay-cation and went to a park for a family picnic where they created new family memories and didn’t break the bank.
